Few things are worse than having mold invade your home. Mold releases spores that can cause serious health issues. It can also trigger allergies and exacerbate asthma symptoms. When not treated, mold can play a significant role in the development of fatigue and depression. However, cleaning mold with harsh chemicals can be just as damaging, causing eye and throat irritation. In some cases, these harmful chemicals can even cause cancer. Fortunately, there are several eco-friendly methods of mold removal you can use. Below, we go over the most common eco mold removal techniques.

Use Vinegar

When it comes to cleaning mold, vinegar reigns supreme. Vinegar is non-toxic and is safe to use on most surfaces where mold develops, such as wood and tile. It also has been proven to remove approximately 82% of mold species.

Put the vinegar in a spray bottle and spray it onto the affected area. Let it sit for a few hours and then wipe off with a sponge. While vinegar is quite pungent, the smell will dissipate after a few hours. If you prefer, you can add in a few drops of essential oil to help combat the smell. Essential oils come in a variety of fruity and flowery scents.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is commonly used as an antiseptic, but it can also remove mold. Hydrogen peroxide has the potential to kill certain types of viruses, bacteria, and fungi, such as mold. It does this by breaking down the bacteria’s DNA.

As with vinegar, put your hydrogen peroxide into a spray bottle and spray onto the moldy area. Let the hydrogen peroxide sit on the affected area for a minimum of one hour, then scrub to clean.

Baking Soda

You can’t use baking soda on its own to remove mold. However, it becomes an effective eco-friendly method when mixed with either water or vinegar. Combine the baking soda and water/vinegar until it makes a paste. Spread it over the mold and then let it sit for at least 15 minutes. Once time’s up, scrub it with a sponge.

Tips for Removing Mold

Regardless of which method you select, remember to dampen the affected surface before applying any sort of product. This will help keep the mold spores contained to that one spot. Since mold can trigger allergies and irritate the skin, it’s recommended to wear gloves and a mask when you clean.
